One keyboard for Mac and Windows: what to check

Operating system support, key remapping and lighting quirks to check before buying a keyboard for a mixed Mac and PC desk.

Many desks now hold a work laptop and a personal PC. A keyboard that handles both saves space, but support differs more than the product photos suggest.

Check the brand's system list

  • NuPhy lists Windows, macOS and Linux for the Air75 V2; AppleInsider also reports iOS and Android.
  • Lofree lists Windows, Android, macOS, iPadOS and iOS for the Flow84.
  • Launch coverage lists the 8BitDo Retro 87 as compatible with Windows 10/11.

Remapping on a Mac

The Air75 V2 can be remapped with QMK/VIA, which is how you move Command and Option where your hands expect them. How-To Geek reports extra effort getting VIA working on macOS, so plan a few minutes for setup.

Small things that matter

  • How-To Geek notes the Air75 V2 backlight does not shine through the keycaps.
  • Trusted Reviews lists no companion software for the Flow84.
  • The Retro 87 adds a button that opens the Game Bar on Windows.
